Disciplinary problems in Primary school? Who should be blamed of?

By : Bawani A/P Arjunan

Bullying, playing truant, gengsterisme, vandalisme and the list will go on and on. i don't think these words were common among the students in 70's or 80's. But, nowadays these are the main issues being discussed in nation and global wide. What is going on with the primary kids nowadays? At one face of newspaper, news about primary students who been excel academically spread out, but deep within the same newspaper, we can go through lots of news about the students who been caught for playing truancy, vandalizing public ammenities and for bravely bitting up the teachers.

The headline 'Students set fire in classroom' really gave me a shock of my life. Are the students not been guided properly through our education system? I don' think our education system lack in any aspects as the religious and morale studies been integrated into our education system long long ago. In these case, the blame will fall on the teachers role. Are the teachers playing their role as an educator or just as a teacher who teaches for the sake of being paid by the government. A teacher should be an educator- who can guide, lead, assist and 'torch' the students into a proper life path. It is an undeniable truth that there are some teachers who fail to be a 'TEACHER'. A respectable teacher should really care about the students' need and try to fulfill it through their teaching. As this can add attachment between the students and the school which at the same time could avoid the students being 'dragged' into disciplinary problems.

On the other hand, should parents be blamed? Parents who are the person who spending most of their time with the kids should be more responsible and alert of their kids' activities. The fact that many families are 'dual' income families and most parents dont have the time to really 'take care of their children can be a dominant factor that assist the increase of disciplinary problems. Besides, the parents should always keep an eye (they will need more than an eye) on their kids' friends. Primary kids like to be with their peers most of the times. They will be the loyal follower to their peers' activities. At this point, no matter how good a kid been raised up, the peer will take the full charge of the kids' life.

Finally, I would like to let the others to decide on 'who should be blamed of these disciplinary problems???? Keep on doing the thinking.

  1. dear editor,

after i've read ur blog, i did surprise with the students nowadays. as i'm a teacher in training, i did went off for a practicum for 3 months. what i can say is, the fault shouldn't blame on the teachers at all!!

i did saw many teachers show their concern to the students. but what the students repay are, they did not show respect to the teachers, make noise at the class even the teachers did ask them to keep quiet.

therefore, i think the family background is the main problem that caused the students misbehave nowadays. don't you think so? majority of the parents left their children at home for the purpose of earning money to raise up the family. however, they did not taught their children how to behave and show a proper manner. eventhough their children made a mistake, they did not correct them instantly which could lead them to misbehave in school or outside the world.

do you agree with my standpoint?

  2. Dear Editor,

In my opinion, parents should be blamed for students' misbehavior and disciplinary problems in school. Parents nowadays are too materialistic and tend to neglect their children in search of money and wealth. Children who are neglected and longing for parent's love started to involve in indisciplinary problems such as gangsterism, bullying and truancy in order to attract their parents' attention. They start to mingle up with bad group of students.

I strongly feel that, parents should take some initiative to get to know their children's friends so that they could ensure their children from mixing with wrong buddies. What's the point parents keep on searching for wealth when their own kids are being spoilt?

  4. Dear Editor,

I strongly believe that teachers play a bigger and vital role in students' misbehaviour and disciplinary problems. Students spending most of their time in both school and home. So, apart parents its teachers' responsibility to guide the kids into right path. They should instil good moral values during lessons.

Firstly, why children playing truant? If the class is interesting and if they like the teacher for sure students won't cut the class and wondering outside school during class hour. So, is't the students'fault? Besides, teachers should identify problematic students. They should discuss their problems and give counselling rather than giving punishment and neglecting them. Moreover, the teachers must find out the students family background and talk to the children's parents regarding the kids' problems in school.

  6. Dear editor,

I think the main cause of the disiplinary problems among students is their family background. Basically, a student's family plays an important role in moulding their lifestyle. When a family fails to educate their children in sense of their behaviour, they become naughty to get their own parents' or others' attention.

These types of students can be seen in a family where their parents were divorced or very busy until no time to spend with their own children. When a child has less communication with their parents and acquired some negative friendships, they start to do something brutal in order to fulfill their leisure, such as bullying their schoolmates, vandalisme, gangterisme, smoking and so on.

Therefore, the parents should be more concern on their children by getting know their daily activities and their friends' details. Parents should spend more time with their children and be able to talk to them as friends.

I strongly believe that parents have all the power or ability to change a problematic child's behavior. This is because, parents are the designers of children, who are like a plain white cloth in childhood.
